MP Woodworth Challenges Putting Abortion Ahead of Human Equality<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

OTTAWA, Ontario <\/strong>\u2015 Stephen Woodworth, Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre <\/strong>responded today to Abortion Rights Coalition\u2019s Joyce Arthur\u2019s reported comments about his proposal <\/i>\u201cthat the Parliament of Canada declare that the equal worth and dignity of everyone must be recognized by Canadian law based on their inherent nature as a human being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWomen\u2019s rights are enhanced by affirming human equality and dignity, not threatened as Joyce Arthur suggests,\u201d Woodworth said.<\/p>\n

Woodworth points out that by focusing on the single issue of abortion protection, the Abortion Rights Coalition is taking positions which are more and more extreme and unreasonable, citing the following:<\/p>\n

1. They opposed specifically criminalizing coercion of women.<\/li>\n
2. They advocated sheltering Canada\u2019s 400 year old, medieval definition of human being from twenty-first century science and understanding.<\/li>\n
3. They sought limitations on the already limited role of backbench MPs.<\/li>\n
4. They opposed allowing Parliament the opportunity to condemn discrimination against women through gender selection.<\/li>\n
5. They try to suppress the right of MP\u2019s and others to publicly discuss issues.<\/li>\n
6. They have caused the repeal of transparency and accountability laws on abortion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

   \u201cNow it appears that Ms. Arthur\u2019s abortion group even proposes that their concern with abortion trumps the democratic value of affirming universal human equality,\u201d said Woodworth. \u201cAs we have discovered, this approach to abortion mirrors the approach of North Korea and Vietnam. Canadians are catching on to the dangers of such extremist views.\u201d<\/p>\n
