One sign of a humane and just society is how we react when confronted with an unexpected injustice. The torture and abuse inflicted on chickens by farm workers was intentional and wholly unacceptable. The reactions that poured in on social media show that we have compassion for animals and, generally speaking, an understanding that there are more proper ways to handle the production of chicken prior to it being served up on our dinner plates.
There is another species in Canada that endures a similar fate to the suffering chickens seen in the Mercy for Animals video. In fact, this species has no protection whatsoever and this leads to 100,000 of them being dismembered, disemboweled, and decapitated every single year in Canada. And there is nary a murmur or complaint from the public.
It is laudable to advocate for the humane treatment of chickens and to express righteous indignation when exposed to videos such as we saw this week. How much more, then, should we advocate for something far more precious than a chicken? If we are truly a humane and compassionate society then it’s time for Canadians to ask for lawful protection of pre-born children.
]]>Re: Pro-life flag display at Chilliwack Museum
As the organizers of last Saturday’s educational event, we would like to clarify that we followed all the rules the City of Chilliwack set before us. We were given written permission from the Director of Corporate Services to proceed with our event. It was only a day before the event was to take place that the city tried to prevent it from happening without giving reasons or citing any potential bylaw infraction. We can only assume that it was because of the message.
The flag display took place on the Chilliwack Museum grounds of which the cenotaph is a part of. The location was chosen because of its high visibility and exposure to foot traffic. While many connections could aptly be made between the cenotaph (which incidentally means “a monument erected in honour of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere”) that was not the reason we chose this location.
We hope Veterans and citizens of the City of Chilliwack understand that our intention was never to connect our display to Remembrance Day. If in the process of drawing attention to the fact that 100,000 Canadians do not experience the same freedom as everybody who witnessed the display we offended any Veterans, we sincerely apologize.
On behalf of the local organizers,
Emily van Brederode and Mike Schouten

]]>Ms. Mallory’s reaction is telling, as images of dead babies should evoke this type of emotion from every human being. That abortion is juxtaposed with the treatment of Rwandan children is entirely accurate; it is the injustice of both situations – the inhumane treatment of human beings – that is fundamentally the same.
The Rwandan genocide was exposed to the world via images, and people were rightly aghast. In fact, it is because the slaughter of the Tutsis was brought to us in such vivid imagery that world leaders sought to deal with this human rights violation of epic proportions. So also, the atrocities being perpetrated against children in the womb need to be exposed to the world in order for this current human rights violation to be addressed.
Residents of Chilliwack have a right to be angry, as do all Canadians exposed to the graphic imagery of abortion. But our anger needs to be properly directed. When we became aware of the Rwandan genocide by way of the vivid imagery shown to us by the news networks, we did not express our anger towards CBC News or the Globe and Mail. Instead, we directed our anger toward the ideology that allowed, or even encouraged, such violence. So also now, let us not direct our anger at those who show us what abortion does but against the ideology which allows for the lawful killing of children in the womb at any stage of pregnancy.
